Here's something that isn't on anyone's radar.
Early in my career, on the east coast, I was the inspiration for the workflow to conform “A” & “B” film-transfer rolls to videotape. Commercials shot on film would be brought in as “A” & “B” checkerboard film rolls and then transferred respectively to “A” & “B” tapes. Then we would conform them automatically to a master tape exactly as the film editor wanted.

The film editor added tones to a second audio track and with the help of our engineering guys at Video City those tones triggered the Grass Valley switcher exactly where the film editor wanted transitions to occur. The Process eliminated the middle step of chemically conforming the “A” & “B” rolls to a master film before transferring to tape, thus saving time and possible errors.

The image to the right is one frame of a demo tape made from a 30 second commercial for Rollins Security Systems. The tape was made to help clients understand our service. The composite depicts the “B” roll of the Rollins system box just after a dissolve from the “A” roll, which shows the host. For illustration purposes and running simultaneously, images of the padded “A” & “B” rolls were superimposed over the composite image.
